M5 Seats

My dream to own a M5 has never faded. While realistically, the probability of ever owning one is remote, there is nothing to stop me from living parts of that dream. Thus, the M5 seats which were shipped all the way from Germany for a pricely sum of money. No matter, it is still cheaper than owning the whole M5. There is no real performance benefit or comfort factor compared to my previous Recaro seats. In fact, I think the Recaros are much better seats. They are more body-hugging, adjustable and probably lighter too. But, when you have a dream, you need to work at it to make it real, even if it is in parts. I think they look great, especially that curved-back portion. The set comes complete with rear seats and door panels. Alas, since I don't have a folding back rear seat, I cannot use the M5 rear seats unless I cut the opening or weld some strong points to anchor the seats. I've decided to put the rear seats installation on hold for now. With regards to the door panels, since they are for LHD, the windows and rear-view mirror controls are on the opposite side. No matter, it's a small problem that will be solved in due course.

See my rear-view mirror? It's no longer the M3/M5 oval type. I parked my car under the sun the other day and the mercury from inside leaked out, damaging my gear-shift plastic panel. Luckily, my M5 titanium trim was not affected. While the mirror may look stylish and give the interior some panache, nothing beats a good old mechanical mirror that will not leak mercury or any other juices. It's also cheaper to replace. This one cost me $60 since I bought it second-hand. The M3/M5 oval mirror costs $700. Once again, do your maths. I understand from my mechanic that it's common for M3 owners to change the rear-view mirror twice a year especially if they parked their car in direct sunlight.

Speed Sample

This was taken during one of our Sunday drives. I don't advocate such speeds unless your car is thoroughly prepared. High speed does not kill, stupidity does. So, be smart...make sure you know yourself, your car and the road. If there's one factor you are not sure of, slow down. Live to drive another day.

The rest of the pictures shows you where we have been.
